Configuring a workstation for remote server administration (AD & Exchange)
Solution Please note: anyone can install the following software, but in order to be able to use it properly your user account will need the correct admin rights and permissions. Please contact either ourselves or your local IT Administrator to check if you have the required permissions.

In order to configure your workstation to remotely administrate Active Directory and Exchange, you will need to install 2 pieces of software:

- The Microsoft Server Remote Administration tools, available for download by clicking here, and:
- The Exchange System Manager, available either from your original installation media, or (in some cases) a shared folder on the network where the setup files have been stored.

The installation process is as follows:

- Install the Remote Admin tools (run the installer, choose where to place the extracted files, then go into that folder and run the setup program), then try opening Active Directory Users and Computers from the Administrative Tools list you will have in All Programs. You should be able to see various groups, users and other OUs.

When you are satisfied that all the assets are showing up correctly, move onto installing the Exchange System Manager as follows:

- Either insert the installation disk or locate the network share for the Exchange files. If using the CD, let it start the setup program. If using a network share, go into the /setup/i386/ folder and run setup.exe. After some processing Exchange will present you with a list of software to install. Choose "custom" for Microsoft Exchange (the very first option) by clicking in the box just to the left of the name, then choose "install" for Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools by doing the same.

Now that this is complete, the setup will configure and complete itself automatically. Once done, you can now open Active Directory Users and Computers again, and this time you will be able to configure the Exchange options in user properties. If you experience any problems after following these steps, please contact us by clicking here.
